Attorney General Gansler knows our democracy only works if it works for everyone, which is why he set up the first Division of Civil Rights in the Office of the Attorney General and hired its first director.

Protecting Voting Rights

  • Established Voting Irregularities Task Force to review irregularities in 2006 election and develop recommended improvements to ensure voter protection.
  • Testified on Capitol Hill in support of federal legislation that would impose stricter penalties on individuals who produce or distribute materials designed to intentionally suppress voter turnout during federal elections;

Promoting Diversity in Education

  • Published “Strengthening Diversity in Maryland Colleges and Universities: A Legal Roadmap,” providing Maryland institutions of higher learning with legal guidance when creating new affirmative action programs that increase minority enrollment and graduation rates.
  • Implemented a new initiative to provide legal support to Maryland’s universities and colleges to help improve recruitment of underrepresented minorities.

Public Safety

  • Formed Electronic Weapons Task Force to review current law enforcement policies regarding the use of electronic weapons; published recommended protocols and training.

Fundamental Business Fairness 

  • Established the Working Group on Lending Practices to reform sub-prime and predatory lending practices.
  • Successfully negotiated agreement with Arbitron Inc. requiring the company to improve its system for determining radio ratings in the Washington, D.C. and Baltimore radio markets, resulting in a more accurate sampling of the radio audience in the two markets.
  • Supported legislation banning the creation of new ground rents and for the gradual extinguishment of existing ground rents.
